Diminishing Unsightly 'Spider Veins'

Spider Vein Therapy - Sclerotherapy
Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small purple to red blood vessels often visible on the leg, ankle or foot. Occasionally, spider veins will appear on the face. The cause is unknown, but heredity plays a strong role in the development of this condition. These should not be confused with varicose veins, which are larger, deeper veins that are usually lumpy and sometimes deeper purple in color. Spider veins are progressive, and usually increase in number and visibility with age.

Spider Vein Treatment
The oldest and most common treatment for spider veins on the legs is sclerotherapy. This involves injection of a sclerosing agent into the veins, which irritates the vessels, causing them to shrink and fade from the surface of the skin. Multiple veins can be injected at each 30-minute session.

The Best Candidates For Sclerotherapy
Women of any age may be good candidates for sclerotherapy, but most fall in the 30-to-60 category. In some women, spider veins may become noticeable very early on - in the teen years. For others, the veins may not become obvious until they reach their 40s.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you may be advised to postpone sclerotherapy treatment. In most cases, spider veins that surface during pregnancy will disappear on their own within three months after the baby is born. Also, because it's not known how sclerosing solutions may affect breast milk, nursing mothers are usually advised to wait until after they have stopped breastfeeding.
Spider veins in men aren't nearly as common as they are in women. Men who do have spider veins often don't consider them to be a cosmetic problem because the veins are usually concealed by hair growth on the leg. However, sclerotherapy is just as effective for men who seek treatment.

Who will perform my Sclerotherapy?
Jennifer Bellestri, Affinity's nurse practitioner, graduated from the University of Michigan with numerous academic accolades. She has more than 13 years of nursing experience including surgery, emergency medicine, cardiology, anti-aging medicine, and aesthetic medicine.  Jennifer specializes in Sclerotherapy, a relatively painless in-office procedure using a very fine needle to inject solution into spider veins or reticular veins causing them to collapse. Jennifer also specializes in SmartLipo, both as a consultant for clients considering the procedure and as an assistant during the procedure.  She spends a generous amount of time with each client to help gain a personal understanding of their cosmetic goals.  Jennifer is dedicated to making clients feel comfortable and educated about their cosmetic procedures while developing a caring nurse-client relationship.
